As long as i know,
the first one which named as upgrade. It upgrades your previous operating system into windows 7 (actually it installs a fresh version of windows 7 in the same drive in which your current windows operating system is installed). This feature is usually disabled in those dvd which is pirated. If you are using a pirated dvd then you will find a pop-up message mentioning some thing like, “this feature is unavailable.” (i use pirated dvd so i cant say any thing more then this)
the second, named as custom (advanced).
You should use this option. If you select this option you will have to select a partition to setup windows 7.
You can setup either formating the partition or with out formating the partition.
If you dont format then all previous files of that hard-drive will be saved in a folder named as “windows old” in the same partition root directory.
If you wish you can make a dwell boot. In this case,
for an example, if you have xp already installed in your C drive. You will have to select D or E or F….. drive.
When you will start or restart your pc a boot up screen will be shown to select the operating system.
The list of operating systems is like

you will have to select one of these by pressing up or down arrow button & enter. Other wise, After 30 seconds windows 7 will automatically boot-up as default.
How ever it can be changed.

You will have to have 15 to 20GB or more for windows 7 64bit.
And about 12 to 15GB for 32bit.
You will need minimum 2GB ram.
